After the success of the Aquostika series with Franco & JohnoyRequiem Rising & Pinoytuner moved on to bring their project to a bigger scale. Headlining two of the acclaimed female alternative artists from the Philippines, Eve’s Faire was one of the groups’ ambitious event which aimed to agitate the foundations of St. James Powerstation. The first set showcased the sweet & charming Barbie Almalbis, who was responsible for launching Hungry Young Poets and Barbie’s Cradle  into stardom.

Our group, MASP, once again was tasked to cover the event so we took the opportunity to catch the artists during the sound check. It was cool to see Barbie setting up her gear on her own without a guitar tech.

All shots were taken using the Nikon 24-70 2.8G & my trusted workhorse 135mm f2 DC. The camera was set using Manual at ISO 2500, aperture at f2.8, & shutter at 1/125 for the 24-70 while the 135mm f2 DC was used using ISO 1600, aperture at f2.2, & shutter at 1/250. In general, the lighting displayed strong primary washes with the absence of spotlight on the artists which initially consumed my patience to wait for the proper light to shoot at their faces. The good thing was that it was quite predictable so I wasn’t hogging the pit throughout the show.

One of the highlights during this set was when Barbie took the drums to cover the late Francis M’s hit Kaleidoscope World, instructing her drummer to do the honors of taking over the microphone.

Barbie’s guitar technical skills were mind-blowing as she showcased famous licks by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, & Eddie Van Halen as intros to her songs. Here’s Barbie sweeping the fretboard with Eruption…
